Copa Libertadores 2026: the last four and the final, seen from Morocco
South America's main club competition, the Copa Libertadores is organised by CONMEBOL ⚽. The 2026 edition started with 47 clubs from the ten member countries and is now into its final month: only Fluminense, Palmeiras, Flamengo and Estudiantes de La Plata are left. That means three Brazilian clubs, one Argentine club, and a single-match final scheduled for Saturday 28 November 2026 at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.

All four semi-final games start at 21:30 local time. In Morocco, that makes them night games, so the second halves run well past midnight. Montevideo was chosen by the CONMEBOL Council on 19 March 2026, and the Estadio Centenario was confirmed on 9 May.
How the semi-finalists got here
Holders Flamengo knocked out Cruzeiro in the round of 16 (3:2 on aggregate), then Independiente del Valle in the quarter-finals (3:1), winning the first leg 2:0 in Quito. Palmeiras removed Cerro Porteño (2:1) before getting past LDU Quito on penalties, 4-3, after a 3:3 aggregate. Fluminense needed a shoot-out as early as the round of 16 against Independiente Rivadavia (1:1, then 5-4) and went on to beat Platense 3:2 over two legs. Estudiantes de La Plata were too strong for Universidad Católica, 4:1, and then for Corinthians, 2:1, winning the return game 1:0 in São Paulo. Flamengo and Estudiantes won both of their ties outright, while Palmeiras and Fluminense each needed a shoot-out along the way.
The draw paired two clubs who already know each other: Estudiantes and Flamengo met in this season's group stage and in the previous edition. On titles, Flamengo and Estudiantes have four each, Palmeiras three and Fluminense one.
The rest of the round of 16
Played from 11 to 13 and from 18 to 20 August, the round of 16 also saw LDU Quito knock out Mirassol on penalties (1:1, then 5-4) and Platense get past Coquimbo Unido the same way (1:1, then 7-6). Independiente del Valle beat Deportes Tolima 4:1 in a tie that CONMEBOL pushed back by a week, to 18 and 25 August. Finally, Corinthians removed Rosario Central 1:0, the only goal in 180 minutes. The quarter-finals then followed from 8 to 10 and from 15 to 17 September.
Format and rules of the 2026 edition
From 3 February to 12 March 2026, three two-legged qualifying phases trimmed the field first, the first bringing together six teams, the second sixteen and the third eight. After the draw on 19 March in Luque, Paraguay, the four phase 3 winners joined the 28 directly qualified clubs in a 32-team group stage, played between 7 April and 28 May 2026. Eight groups of four, six games per club: the top two went into the round of 16 and the third-placed side dropped into the Copa Sudamericana. In the knockout rounds, two teams level on aggregate are separated by a shoot-out, with away goals counting for nothing, whereas the final includes extra time before any shoot-out.

What awaits the champions
The 2026 winners will play in the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup, starting against Toluca, the CONCACAF champions, in the "Derby of the Americas". They will then contest the 2027 Recopa Sudamericana against the 2026 Sudamericana winners, and they already have a ticket to the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup. This year's Recopa slipped away from holders Flamengo, beaten 4:2 on aggregate by Lanús.
Brazil has ruled the competition since 2019. Year by year, the winners were Flamengo (2019), Palmeiras (2020 and again in 2021), Flamengo once more (2022), Fluminense (2023), Botafogo (2024) and Flamengo again (2025). With three Brazilian clubs among the last four, the run can continue in Montevideo, unless Estudiantes bring the title back to Argentina.
